The Guardian have just posted my contribution to the debate on the adequacy or otherwise of media coverage of the economic crisis.

I'd like to work up a more detailed look at this subject in the weeks ahead. Anyone interested in seeing what I come up with can leave a post here with their contact details or email me at dcehind@hotmail.com. And if you are aware of any examples of hopeless puffery, blatant log-rolling or fantastical optimism from journalists, economists and other opinion-formers, then I would love to hear from you.

Dan,

Good piece on CiF. I think you missed something important about Stewart's pieces on Cramer.

He doesn't think Cramer was dumb or was too sheepish, he thinks Cramer was a knowing participant, indeed conspirator, in a system that he *knew* would make his rich friends richer at the expense of Americans and their retirement funds. He thinks Cramer was part of a con.

This is a much stronger allegation than mere ignorance or stupidity. I'd be interested to see if there was a similar conspiracy over here.

hi, Bruce,
You're right that Stewart goes much further in his criticism of Cramer that I would go in my comments about the British press. Business journalists probably knew a good deal more about outright criminal behaviour here than they reported and some of them were actively involved in that criminal behaviour, for sure.

But what was much more widespread, both here and in the States, was a kind of necessary ignorance or incuriosity. In order to proceed professionally in most places you had to show a quite refined ability not to spot the blindingly obvious.

This plays to a much wider "media as complicit fourth estate" theme that can be seen played out on such issues as Israel and Palestine. Part conspiracy (in a non-rabid sense) and part ignorance.

I'd be very interested to read what you come up with.
